I recently had an experience with my SatNav: it started giving me crazy directions, sending me the wrong way and calculating a 300-mile route for a short journey! This reminded me of human fallibility and the fallibility of their systems. We are often told how reliable a new technology is, only to find that sooner or later it is malfunctioning. However small the risk of error may be, it is an ever-present reality in relation to earthly things. But everything changes when we shift our dependency to Heaven, for its ways are never subject to error. As the writer to the Hebrews says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). He never changes in His character or His loving actions towards us, and, because He is wholly reliable, we can safely base our lives upon our relationship with Him. We know that there will never be an occasion when He misdirects us. We may mishear Him, but He will never mislead us. Let us then follow the only reliable guide, practising His presence with us at all times, and actively using our Spirit-inspired imagination to hear His voice. Jesus is speaking to us continually, but are we listening? To the degree that the church listens to Him, the Kingdom of God is established on earth.
