We maintain that active reliance on Jesus is the greatest key to the health and mission of the church, not only in the first century, but in every age. At the beginning the church walked closely with Him, His love was felt, His power flowed from Heaven, and people were added daily. I believe it fair to say that they were drawn by love, and that love had its source in the Saviour. Jesus promised that if He was ‘lifted up’ (He was referring to the Cross) He would draw men and women to Himself. But what if we block the reach of Jesus through the church? What if we choose to do things our way rather than His? The result will be that people are not drawn, at least not by Jesus. We have a saying that people are sometimes drawn to things ‘like bees round a honeypot.’ When bees know the honey is there, they will come. In our day, people are as spiritually hungry as ever, but sadly many see nothing in the church to draw them. It’s as though there’s no honey, and people, like bees, sense that. Put the honey back in the Church and guess what? – people will come. In fact, we won’t be able to stop them! They’ll come running.
