Amma Theodora was asked, 'At the resurrection of the dead, how shall we rise?' She said, 'As pledge, example, and as prototype we have Him who died for us and is risen, Christ our God.'

Connecting With the Culture

If we want to be effective in sharing the good news of salvation, it will help us to be culturally relevant. I remember once going to speak in a nation with a culture very different to my own. My hosts very kindly gave me a sheet of ‘dos and don’ts’ so that I would not embarrass myself or upset my audience! I was most grateful for this and was careful to follow it closely. It made me a lot more acceptable to the group I was teaching. The more ‘out of touch’ we are with a culture and its current trends, the harder it may be for us to connect with those we seek to reach. The answer to this this is familiarisation. Just as we might take time to understand an individual’s views before sharing the Gospel, so we may take a short time to familiarise ourselves with the culture of which they are a member and current events, both local and global, that have a relevance to our hearers.
