Above all human leadership, Christ is the supreme head of the Church (Colossians 1:18; Ephesians 1:22). It has ever been so, though His guidance has not always been followed. The first church was certainly Jesus led. The disciples proved flawed yet faithful followers of their Master, obedient in life and death. The leadership of Christ, the Eternal Word, began with His physical presence as a man, but continued after His ascension in mystical communion. “Abide in Me” were His guiding words to disciples in all ages (John
15:7). It was and is the plan and purpose of God that every form of leadership in the New Testament is derivative and subordinate to His lordship. Leaders are stewards, not rulers; shepherds, not lords (1 Peter 5:1–4). The model is one of Spirit-filled, Heaven directed, servant leadership, as demonstrated by Yeshua Himself when He stooped to wash His disciples’ feet (John 13:14–15). True spiritual leadership submits to Christ’s authority, seeks the Spirit’s guidance, and builds up the body in love. Your leadership and mine will only
ever be as good as our loving obedience to Him and our diligent commitment to faithfully fulfilling His directions.
