The natural movement of our world is not towards stillness, but rather towards activity. This is one of the reasons why God tells us to stop and be still (Psalm 46:10). It's not that activity is wrong per se, but that its drivers may be. Those who never stop and listen to God pay a high price for their choice. Living in a world of death and decay, we are pressurised on every side to build our lives as best we can, and sometimes merely to survive. The challenges of life can seem relentless, and we may be tempted to work harder and harder, striving more and more desperately to gain a place of peace and security. In contrast, God's advice to us may seem counter-intuitive, in that it goes against this natural response. However much we have to do, and however pressurised our life has become, He says "Be still and know that I am God." When we stop and begin to practice stillness, our lives are transformed, becoming more peaceful, even in the midst of turmoil, trouble, and change. Begin your life of stillness today, listening to Jesus.
