Where do we believe contentment comes from? In a consumerist society we are bombarded by messages that contentment will be found in the purchase of this or that product. Whilst it would be foolish to deny that certain material things and services can bring us pleasure, is that all there is to contentment? Would we be perfectly happy is we had enough wealth to purchase everything on offer? One has only to look at the wealthy to see that their wealth and possessions cannot buy them lasting peace within. Wealth can certainly bring advantage, but it can never save, heal, or make whole the human spirit. Ultimate contentment is only found in the ultimate relationship – that of a believer with Jesus Christ the Lord. The writer of Hebrews implies this when he says, “Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5). Goods decay and riches may be lost, but the contentment we have in God remains, for He will never leave us. The disciples of Jesus have something that money can’t buy. No amount of wealth could ever have paid for our salvation. It took the gift of God Himself, becoming a man and dying on a cruel Cross, carrying the unimaginable weight of all human sin, to pay that price. Now, thanks to His inexpressible love, contentment belongs to us. It is bought and paid for. Draw close to Him, listen to His words, and receive that gift afresh today.
