Today's Early Church Wisdom
“The professions and trades of those who are going to be accepted into the community must be examined. The nature and type of each must be established… brothel, sculptors of idols, charioteer, athlete, gladiator…give it up or be rejected. A military constable must be forbidden to kill, neither may he swear; if he is not willing to follow these instructions, he must be rejected. A proconsul or magistrate who wears the purple and governs by the sword shall give it up or be rejected. Anyone taking or already baptized who wants to become a soldier shall be sent away, for he has despised God.”
~ Hippolytus (170AD – 236AD)
This week's Psalm is Psalm 31 'My Rock, My Shield, My Song'

Abide in His Rest

One of the symptoms we sometimes see in those who are mentally unwell is agitation. They are restless to such a degree that they cannot settle to properly perform a task or to interact constructively with others. This is a more extreme form of the restlessness and lack of peace that we see in a great many. Some hide their troubled heart better than others, but inwardly they know that something needs fixing, and they are right. The world offers various ‘paths to peace’ including techniques such as progressive muscle relaxation and mindfulness, but whilst these may have some value, they are never able to deliver the full solution, for that solution requires an intervention that goes beyond psychology and physiology. It is only when men and women are born again through faith in Jesus Christ that they undergo a fundamental transformation of the soul, in which their human spirit is made entirely new. It is at that moment that a new and eternal peace enters their soul, and should they choose to walk and talk with Jesus daily, hearing His personal word to them that builds faith in their heart, they will abide in the rest and peace that they first enjoyed on that day in which they received Him as their Saviour. As the writer of Hebrews declares: “There remains therefore a rest for the people of God” (Hebrews 4:9).
