A second great distinctive of the first church was its empowerment by the Holy Spirit. Jesus promised that His disciples would receive power when the Holy Spirit came upon them, which He did at Pentecost, following Jesus’ ascension into Heaven. The book of Acts chronicles some of the consequences of this empowering, including a number of significant miracles. The Father has never rescinded His decision and taken back the Holy Spirit. Because of this, men and women in every age, from the first century on, have asked for and received what we call the baptism in the Holy Spirit, enabling them to live supernatural lives as moved and inspired by the Spirit of God. Christian history attests to the fact that miracles didn’t stop in around 500 AD as some erroneously claim. We have a great many wonderful stories of the miracles, signs, and wonders that God has done down through the ages. Many today are seeking Him afresh for the filling and anointing of the Holy Spirit, and as they do, we are again beginning to see God move in power.
